This study was performed to evaluate the acute oral toxicity of chitooligosaccharides in Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats. Chitosan and chitooligosaccharides were administered at dose levels of 5,000, 2,500, 1,250, 625, 312.5 and 0 mg/kg body weight. After single oral administration to both sexes of SD rats, we observed rats for 14 days. All chitooligosaccharides did not induce any toxic signs in mortalities, clinical findings, body weights and gross findings of the rats. In view of result, it was impossible to estimate LD50 values in SD rats. Therefore, it was concluded that chitooligosaccharides have no effect on acute toxicity and side effect in rats.
